University Ranking and Department Ranking

September 9, 2007 by Author

I have Happy Schools for about 45 days days and I’m happy to see the blog grow in popularity from such valuable comments. I had some emails asking me about University Ranking and also department ranking wise ranking list. In one of the previous post U.S. News Ranking. Its a Joke
I had strongly discouraged not to follow its Ranking. My ultimate aim is to convey the message ‘Ranking Doesn’t have any significance’. It’s a mere number to classify the Universities. Having said, that next question you guys will have is how are we supposed to select the Universities from my score when so many Graduate School is offering Masters program in my area. Continue reading, I will explain with examples.

If you look at the Ranking list in general and see what criteria is used for Ranking the University, there is no option given for Aid given to Students, What GRE and TOEFL scores are accepted, how many students get part time jobs.

And we are planning to short list universities, we ask only questions like,

1) For my GRE and TOEFL score which Graduate School will give me admission and we will short list under 3 categories: Ambitious, Normal, Safe.

2) If I don’t get Research or Teaching Assistantship, Students Scholarship, can I find at least part time jobs within college campus. So, I can manage my living expenses and pay the fees using Credit Cards.

Now, let me ask you this. How do you think, a Ranking list that doesn’t include any of the above 2 queries for classifying Universities will help you?

Answer is simple. It doesn’t help you.

Answer is: We are looking for List of Universities and list of College Departments( Computer Science and Engineering , Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, ..) and that list must include above 2 factors. Something like..

I have GRE of 1200, TOEFL 90, Academics 75% and you need a list arranged based on accepting students for your credentials.

Suppose, if such list exists, how will it be used by students.. I will give example for that too. I will construct an sample list ( dosen’t have any real value)

1) Stanford University ( GRE : 1500 and above)
2) MIT
3) Harvard University
4) ….
5)….
25) Virginia Tech ( GRE : 1250 and Above)
26) Georgia Tech
27)…..
28) …

50) UTA ( GRE : 1100 and Above)
51) UTD
52) KSU
…..

98) TAMK
99) UNTD
100.)…List goes

If you have such a list student with GRE of 1200 will short list like this

Ambitious:

Virgina Tech
Georgia Tech

Normal:

UTA
UTD
UCF

Safe:

FIT
UNCC
NJIT
TAMUK

More to it, we need to have list that includes to have availability of Part Time jobs and Aid. Its a tough ask for someone to create such a list with all combinations. I looked at the list provided by i20fever, but you can use it if you list of all the Universities you need from U.S.. But is that ultimate guide for all your queries, I don’t think so.

<!–adsense#SmallRect–>
Now,it all boils down to 1 question. How to short list when there are so many Universities. I’ will show how to do it. I’m afraid, it involves some effort, but certainly you will be rewarded. If you guys wonder, how can I write like this. Because I followed the steps I have talked about and going to talk in in next post about short listing your dream 5-8 Universities.
