Reader’s Question: In-State Tuition fee Qualification

Question:

I guess, duration of stay in that state is also required to qualify for In-state Tuition fees. Some U.S. Universities mention it as 1-2 years. Please give me the correct information.

Answer:

Thanks Anushka for your comment on College In-State vs Out of State tuition fee. International Students in U.S. Universities don’t qualify for In-state tuition fee based on Resident Status. To qualify as a state resident, each U.S. Universities have set of criteria that students has to satisfy. But, that applies only to U.S. Residents, not for International Students.

For example when a student who is a resident of Texas applies to a University in Florida has to pay Out of State Tuition fee till the student gets the Resident Status of Florida. Usually, it will take 1 year for the student from Texas to become the Resident of Florida. That 1 year can be from date student was enrolled in the school or date when student gets Driving License in Florida and soon.

UC Davis states Who can be called Resident of California

…To establish residence you must be physically present in California for more than one year and you must have come here with the intent to make California your home as opposed to coming to this state to go to school…

International Students and In-State Fees

To qualify for In-state tuition fee as International Student in U.S. University it must be thorough RA/TA or Scholarship. and again there are some U.S. Universities where getting RA/TA dosen’t qualify for In-state tuition fees. So, when deciding on the Universities, students must take that into consideration. I have listed Happy Point Method to decide and short list universities based on your profile.
