I seriously got dejected after taking up my GRE. I took it twice. First time, without much preparation
i scored 1010(Quan :710 & verbal : 300). Yesterday i took my GRE after 3 months of preparation (I used to study in the weekends & 2 hrs daily), i just got
1060 (Quan: 720 & verbal : 340). One more thing, my first GRE attempt was three years back. In my second
attempt( yesterday) i unusually got 3 essays ( 1- Issue & 2 -Argument ) Is there any changes in the GRE pattern?

Sir, As you said ,one can give GRE in January and can then apply till the end of February.But most of the first 20 to 25 US universities have deadline in December.Then after January very few good universities are left as a option. So considering this,Is it fruitful to give gre in Januray?

My GRE score is 1260(710Q+550V) and TOEFL score is 96. My undergraduate aggregate is 55% and final year is 63%. I have a 79.06% in SSC and 71.67% in HSC. During under-graduation I worked part time with a network marketing firm for year.I and my 2 friends have floated a company since October 2008. It’s a proprietor based model with my friend as the proprietor. We are into website development and software solutions and we have been doing quite well. I manage the marketing and product development aspect of the firm. Will this experience count?

About my Academics, I am more into practical and technical skills than scoring marks.I’ve some backlogs,few standing arrears (will be clearing this semester). I Know that the backlogs are one of the crucial selection criterion in Universities abroad.
I highly regret about having so much backlogs that I realized these things recently.Still is there a Chance for getting admitted?
Also my University Issues a Certificate at the end of Degree with only the Marks on it and No Backlogs in it.So,at the initial Stage of my application, Can i tell them that I’ve Very Less Backlogs?
Will they verify the backlogs by contacting my university and crosscheck?

I have a query regarding the student visas for doing a M.S in US.
I m pursuing my B.Tech from Rajasthan Technical University, Kota (Rajasthan). I will be having my 7th Semester exam in January’10 and 8th Semester exam by July’10. So, will get the results accordingly by June’10 for 7th Sem. and later for 8th Sem.
If however for Fall’10 admissions, i give my GRE and TOEFL by December’09 and get the I-20 form from the university,will i be eligible for visa application and interview ( by April-May’10) without my final year mark sheets ( for we still havn’t got our 6th semester results too ) ?

I’m an architect, and if you remember, I posted a long query sometime back with my then gre score of 1260. Now, however, my second attempt got me 1360 (570verbal; 790quants), still awaiting AWA. TOEFL scores are 117/120 with 27 in speaking (rest all 30).
I’ve 1 yr of teaching exp in design, 1 semster of teaching exp. in architectural history, 5 months of Research exp. (ongoing until March 2010, am an RA to one of my former profs), some community work in my stride, design exp both solely and with 2 firms (currently working with a leading architecture firm in Surat, Gujarat), top scores in college twice and 3rd in final yr with a 70.25%; yes, grades in my university aren’t sloshed out but given frugally, the top scorer got 75% (I can safely presume my GPA to be over 3.5, though I’ve already sent my documents for evaluation to WES). I’ve a good design portfolio, a possible thesis publication in the next 3 months in one of the leading architecture magazines of the country, plus a few ongoing projects.
I plan to apply to Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Texas A&M, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Washington University in St. Louis & North Carolina State University. Do I have some chance of getting a scholarship + assistantship in any or all of the above mentioned universities? Please help me asap, as I plan to complete online applications before Diwali.

Hi.. i have taken GRE “twice”.. first in sep ’08 and second in sep ’09.. i scored 1060 anD mentioned 4 universities… the second time i scored 1130..
After i had taken the test for the second time, i received the score card, but it was the score card of the first attempt…
i applied for 3 univ’s with my “first (1060)” score, and the 3 univ’s that i applied, i did not mention them in the free reporting.
So when i received my score card after second attempt, It was the first attempt score card, but with the name of the 3 universities that i applied..
1. Why is this so?
2. When will i be receiving my score card for the second attempt?
3. Is this supposed to happen or a mistake?
The second time i have taken the test, i have mentioned 4 other univ’s and applied for 1 univ from that 4….
Q: And what is “cumulative” score?

you had ample time to reappear for GRE , Yet reason known to you only you did not do that , friend in your GRE what is your q and v a scores,
it is better for you to rewrite the exam to get better score in GRE and toefl too,
you have still time to do that till nov end 2009

I have a question regarding the H1B for the next FY.
I will be getting my MBA degree at the beginning of May ’10 and during the spring semester I will be taking only one course(which is the only one left I have).
Is there any way that I can still apply under the Master quota by April 1st. Any arrangements that I can make with my school, any paper that I can send to USCIS, any advise.
ps- It is critical to me April 1st, because for to consecutive years, FY2007 and FY2008 I have been subject to that lottery picking and I was never picked.
At least the next year I’m hoping to apply with an advanced degree, perhaps the chances will be higher…

I’ve got a score of 1240 in GRE and i wish to pursue MS in Electronics and Communication (Hopefully with Telecommunication as specialization).
Could you suggest some good universities that are cheap and affordable?? By cheap i mean under a budget of less than $30,000 – $35000 for a complete course of two years including accommodation. Also, what is the scope of financial assistance in the universities; How do we get scholarships etc.??

I would like to pursue MS in ECE preferably VLSI, Embedded systems, Signals and Communication.
My GRE score is 1150 (Q:770, V:380, AWA: 4.5)
TOEFL score is still awaited but expected to be 105.
My undergrad GPA is 9.2/10.
I have successfully completed 2 projects and have given several presentations/seminars.
I’m currently enrolled in Internship program at VODAFONE India.

well i do have interest in all the economics and accounts an stuff but since i had science in my school time and i love computer sciences(hacking and website development),and my main aim in life to work with Microsoft,
I’m confused as to what to do next!!!
also,i swear,but its a 50-50 to both MS and MBA….also one most imp factor is i wanna enjoy doing it and the crowd should be good…..

@Varun – You got some thoughtful questions. Microsoft is the dream company to work for any software engineers. If you you want to go into technical field, then MS should be your choice. So, expose yourself to different field sin second year and see whcih area interests your the most. Based on that, you can decide MS or MBA. Alos, doing MBA without work experience of 2 years is not recommended.

Microsoft is big, but Google is equally good. Getting job in Microsoft is bit easy compared to Google and Amazon these days. You have to be strong in Data Structures, Algorithms and one programming language.

i am pursuing my b.pharmacy, i have had 3 breaks of 6 months each, so that is a lag in studies, 1 year i took off intentionally cos i wanted to think if pharmacy was what i wanted to pursue in life and the last 6 months i got unexpectedly,and my grades have been poor till the 5th sem i have got arrears which i have taken 1 or 2 attempts to clear and have basically been very lax with no aim as to what to do in life. now i have woken up! i have taken my last year seriously ,yet i have an aggregate of 65% but i worked on my gre to get 1310 with a better verbal split.and i graduate in oct 2010. this is my academic profile and i would like to apply for masters in health administration.

First of all I would really like to commend you for such an excellent portal.I think I found everything I wanted in just 10 min, which actually took me hours of googling. I am currently in final year pursuing BE in computer science. I have 69% academics score in last 3 years.
I have been preparing for GRE for past one year and I scored 1390 in the last powerprep test I took. But due to issues with my passport application,I could not give GRE yet.I think I will take the exam in nov last week or dec 1st week. I have 2 queries
1. Since I will have very little time after GRE to go for fall 2010(with such cumbersome application process ), I wanted to ask does it make any difference if I take a six month break and apply for spring 2011?If yes how?
2. I know you have been bombarded with questions like this for 100 times, questions regarding financial aid. but I really cannot afford the whole fee. I wanted to know, what should your profile contain apart from good GRE score, that makes you atleast eligible for aid? Although criteria might vary,but still an idea,like project work, paper work? I chose a very advanced final year project, so that I can make it count. I have also published 1 survey paper in IEEE, and I am working on 2 more papers. Do they matter? If I apply for spring 2011, I will have more time to complete them.(that’s why I asked you the first question, as I had no paper/research work in 6 sems of my engineering, but I am working very hard now. I am positive to score above 1300 in GRE)

When I found out some of the universities for my profile, most of them were in the north. Is the cost of living in the north higher? Also there weren’t a lot of Indian students. I have completed my B.E. in Computer Science with an aggregate of 69%. I have given the GRE twice with the best score being 1120 (Q 700+V 420) and 4.5 (AWA). I have two projects in my 8th semester one of which was carried out as a research project at “The Central Research Laboratory”, Bangalore (which is a premier research institute that comes under the defense ministry of India and Bharath Electronics – worked for 3 months there as a project trainee). I also have worked for July Systems, Inc. for a period of 3 months. With some good recommendation letters and a score of 100 and above in TOEFL, is it possible for me to get an admit in any of the universities in the US? If so, can you please tell me the top ten universities where I can apply and also can you please tell me if I can apply for spring 2010.

890 GRE Score with 6 backlogs it will be tough again. Retake GRE and score above 1100 to improve your visa chances.

I got a new I-94 with my I-797.
I am going to India to my H-1 stamped (i am leaving in august) – Currently on F-1.
The I-797 / h-1 begins on October 1st.
So when I leave U.S. do i need to return the new I-94 that’s at the bottom of the I-797 or do I just give the old I-94 (the one from F-1). Or potentially both ?

You have good academics and you can certainly apply for admission, but applying to admission is not as simple as it sounds. You cannot simply select few schools to get scholarship. It’s more involved process. Consider joining Premium Membership Club to get more detailed information.

I am planning to apply to the university of Utah for the spring 2010 term for a Phd in Civil Enggineering (Majoring in Transportation). Will it be too late for me to apply now considering the fact that the TOEFL score card will arrive only 45 days later. I have a good academic profile with 85% aggregate in B.E. I am doing my research assistanceship at IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bangalore from the past year. Also, I have a paper under review at an international journal (ASCE).

I would like to know how is the MPH program at the University North Texas Health Science Center…how are the research opportunities…since I don’t know much abt this Uni and had applied to it only as a safe university since i had a very good profile (GRE 1500 toefl 112/120 and GPA 4/4 in MBBS) but am now considering it since it is offering me financial aid.
I am comparing it with the University Of Texas Health Science Center which I prefer (ranked 12 for MPH, very good program, very good for research, and I know a lot of seniors here) …though haven’t got any financial aid here..

Here is an interesting situation.
Happy is a J-1 exchange student. Completes his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering.Completes his 18 months course related work-experience equivalent to OPT for F-1s.(J-1s arent issued EAD card, just a letter from university).
Now he wants to take a 2 or 4 year degree in business to enhance his skill, and received a J-1 waiver.
The question is : can he still get a OPT after his 2 or 4 years second degree?
Would be grateful for your answer!
I wish I knew the answer. OPT is issued only one per degree level. Once for Bachelors, once for Masters. If you get 2 Bachelors degree, you get only one OPT and same applies to MS and MBA. but, I’m not sure how work period for J1 will be considered.

I have appeared for F1 visa interview in 29th april. They kept my passport, gave me a confirmation letter saying that my visa application is successfull and additional admistrative processing is required which may take long time. My question is, how much time generally they take for additional processing for F1 visa? If they take much time(more than 3 months), then my academic session could me missed. So what should do then? Anshula – You have very good profile. I guess you must be aware of the fact, GRE Score alone will not get into good university. You have very good chances to get admission with fellowship/assistantship. I would suggest you go to apply for 8 to 10 schools by spending time in selecting schools that have research interest in your area. If you find it difficult to select schools, then apply for 5 schools, come to US spend one semester and get transfer to better school.

Yes – employee is dependent on the employer. One cannot enter US without the employers knowledge.
I guess the person you are talking about should have applied for H1 through a consultant and they should have asked to sign a contract. It depends on the contract. AS per USCIS, employee should not pay for any expenses and they can transfer H1 to other employer. Always its good idea to consult with an immigration professional for this type of situation.

No, I’m not an employer.
Answers:
1. Chances of getting H1B this year is 99% if u had applied before 7th apr and ur paper work is perfect.
2. Yes, she will be dependent on the employer, who has filled her H1B.
3. U would have to stick to ur contract, there is no way out specially if ur employer is paying u according to ur contract. If u’ll try to break t contract then ur employer can sue u.

@Jean – I dont think so. To be in status you will need to be enrolled in the school full time. Rare cases they allow for less than full time enrollment. Talk to your International Office for more details.
Why do we have to pay three time the amount the a resident pay. I can not afford.
Thats how the fees are structured. Public schools are run by tax payers money. So, if you are resident of a state you pay In state fee, if not out of state.

my profile is GRE: 1250 (q:750, v:500), CGPA:4.15/5.00.good recommendation letters and SOP.yet to see my toefl scores.what are the chances of getting into these schools with some form of financial aid.I heard IIT doesn’t give full sponsorship.Thank you.

Hello. My GRE score is 1200 and TOEFL is 102. I am a petrochemical engg with CGPA of 7.34/10. I am applying for environmental engg and for biological and agricultural engg. I would like to know which course has better scope ahead? Also I hav been offered an assistantshp for both the courses at two diff univs. which major should I opt for and why?

You are doing a wonderful job and i truly appreciate your work from the bottom of my heart.
I am very much intrested in doing Specialization in Robotics and i have won many Prizes in Robotics Competetion ( IEEE events )
But I am very much scared of the fact that after completing My MS (Specialization in Robotics) whether I will land up getting a good job or do i have to Struggle a lot ?
I am also good in Networks and Embedded System programming but I am Intrested in Robotics !
Suggest me if i can take Robotics for my MS.
Are there any carrer Opportunities for Robotics ?
Will I land up getting a good job In a good Company after completing my MS?

I tuk my GRE test on 30dec n scored 960(670 quant 290 verbal)..During the Test,I put for 4universities..Out of those I got admission letter copy from Massachusets university,Boston..I dnt know whether funding is provided r not.I checked out in websites but dnt find required information…Vat should I do anna??

I have built my network to a certain degree(about 45 comtacts). i would like to know wat kind of messages do u send on linkedinto recruiter/manager in order to get an interview. Should you directly send your cover letter of a specific message? I would be grateful if you could post a few samples or provide some resources which would help me in my job search.
